Is LED Landscape Lighting really the best solution? In the past, halogen lighting had no equal. LED technology lacked maturity and quality and provided inconsistent results at best.
But that was then, and this is now. In recent years LED has improved profoundly and become very affordable. If you are thinking of installing a new lighting system, the advantages of LED are numerous. Is your system currently running on Halogen bulbs? Consider the following…
Here are the top Seven reasons LED trumps Halogen:
1. You save big on your energy bill with LED:
Nowadays, a 5-watt LED is just as bright as a 30-watt Halogen. That means Halogen needs SIX times the power to run at the same brightness. That equals a roughly 85% difference in energy usage. For LED landscape lighting, this also means you can run a much larger display off same transformer.
2. LED has a 10x+ longer life:
This means 1/10th the headache and lower long-term cost. Your neighbor will have bought 9 new bulbs and climbed his tree 9 times while you sip sangria on your patio before you need to replace your first LED landscape lighting bulb. This is also why we exclusively use LED for Christmas lights.
3. Halogen can literally burn your fingerprints off:
Halogen bulbs convert roughly 97% of the energy they receive into heat – and can get up to 275 degrees Fahrenheit! What an excellent way to get a nice little brush fire going in your yard while you’re out on vacation. We can’t stop you from buying halogen, but if you must, pick up some marshmallows while you’re at it.
4. LED is much more durable:
We all know traditional bulbs are fragile. However, since LED doesn’t need a filament like halogen, the most vulnerable and delicate part of your bulb is no longer there. This makes hits from the lawnmower much less devastating.
5. LED Doesn’t Attract Bugs:
Bugs are attracted in droves to those hot-spots in your yard and trees that halogen bulbs generate. If you feel like you already have enough blood-sucking guests frequenting your lawn, buy LED landscape lighting and politely point the insects to your neighbor’s house down the street.
6. LED has a wider voltage tolerance:
When halogen bulbs get just a little too much (or not enough) power, they burn out pretty quickly. If you have ever had fixture that burns out one halogen bulb after another, it’s likely a problem related to voltage. However, LEDs have a voltage tolerance that is 300% wider, which is more than enough room to handle the kind of voltage variation that would destroy a halogen bulb.
7. Yes, LED comes in warm colors!
Understandably, many homeowners express concerns that LED lights will appear more white or blue in comparison to the older alternatives. In the past, that was certainly a problem. However, thanks to advances in the past few years, LED light can actually come out WARMER than the alternative.
But buyer-beware: not all LED’s are created equal.
The typical products you will find at big-box stores are junk and have the warranty to match. Expecting a product with a 1-year warranty to work for 20 years doesn’t make a lot of sense. If you’re serious about getting lights that will last, you want solid, durable products like those we install at Lux Lighting, which happen to carry a lifetime warranty. What if you already have fixtures with halogen bulbs? Can / should you replace them with LED landscape lighting? Absolutely!
